30 sec exposure

My first post of 2017... For this shot I used a 10 stop Vu ND filter with a shutter speed of 63 seconds at f/2.8 & ISO 400. The main reason was that there were a boatload of people on the beach, including one man who kept walking back and forth to the water's edge the whole time I was there. Since I wanted to get the reflections in the water, doing a very long exposure made him disappear, along with the many other passersby. Happy New Years Everyone!

The last sunset of November, 2016

My first sunrise of December, 2016

This is a composite of two photos I took last week during the "super moon" rise from the top of La Cumbre Peak. There have been a lot of photos posted, many of them absolutely amazing, some of which are legit, some of which are obviously fake, and some where it's hard to tell for sure. I did this for two reasons... one just because it looks cool and "could" have been real, and one just to help people be more discerning. EVERY photo you see has been edited in some way... some by the camera/phone and some by the photographer - it's a matter of who was in control and how much they did, etc. It would be nice if there was a mandatory disclaimer for composites but, short of that, just be aware and enjoy the ride. #composite #photoshop #supermoon

I went up to the top of La Cumbre Peak to check out the moon rise on the day before the "super moon". Looking the other way, out over the ocean, was the most amazing sunset. The cloud formation was so vast that I had to make a panorama to capture the whole thing (7 images stitched together). What's really cool is, if you look in the trees to the far left, you can see the moon peeking through, while on the right side you can still see the sun sitting just above the horizon.

One of three "Super Moon" rise photos I took from the top of La Cumbre Peak in Santa Barbara County, CA on November 13, 2016. The two closer views were shot through a Canon 600mm f.4 lens, with the night shot also having a 1.4x teleconverter. The image with the tree in the forground used a Canon EF 70-200 f.2.8 L USM. All were shot with a Canon 5D Mark III.

This one was taken in northern Vermont on my way to Lake Willoughby. I like how the colors of the farm equipment match the colors of the surrounding scenery. 10.6.16

I've been waiting to post this until I got my new monitor because I really wanted to capture the colors properly... I think I've done so. I hope you enjoy!

So, there's a story behind this one... This is the river where I lost my two Singh-Ray Galen Rowell Signature gradiated filters. Unfortunately, up to now, I've been using a cheap Cokin filter holder with them, and have been meaning to replace it for some time, but had not yet done so. The wisdom of my intentions was proved when, while standing on the new bridge above where this was taken - using the filters to lower the brightness of the leaves and sky in the upper portion of the frame - the whole thing dropped off of my lens and into the water... approximately where the very cold water is moving swiftly in the right side of the frame. Now you know why I was down there... wading out into the water in the early morning (about 40 degrees), unsuccessfully trying to recover my filters. And now you know why I had to use exposure blending in Photoshop to achieve a similar effect. I guess the good news is that I got this shot with the reflections of the beautiful leaves in the water. So, if anyone's up in the Mt. Washington/Fabyan area of New Hampshire and would like to go fishing for some filters, let me know! In the meanwhile, I'm shopping for new filters and a filter holder system that will stay on my camera... (#GoFundMe ??).

This was actually taken from "Sunset Hill" in the Sugar Hill community of New Hampshire, near Franconia

Driving through the Sugar Hill area of New Hampshire near Franconia enjoying the fall foliage, I happened upon this broken down barn and stopped for the shot.

This is the same image I used for my "iPhone" version which I posted a couple of weeks ago. That one was fun, but I really like this uncluttered version of the image... I hope everyone else does too!

This is a 3 shot pano, taken at Campus Point on Sunday evening (1.24.16) during an extremely low tide.

This was our sunrise this morning while the East Coast was bracing for a blizzard.

HDR panorama, taken at sunrise on the 2015 Winter Solstice, from UCSB.

While walking on the UCSB campus beach I was surprised to see this "waterfall" of runoff water gushing out of a pipe and down the bluffs to the sand, and then out to sea. I'm not sure where all this water is coming from, but it seems a shame to waste it considering our drought...!
